A Call to Action for WMAL Listeners

The Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendant and the members of the School Board need to hear from YOU.

School children are being short-changed with another belt-tightening budget. Money should be directed first to the people and programs inside the school buildings. Instruction should never be compromised in any area of the curriculum. Fairfax County has always prided itself in leading the nation in the quality and variety of its instructional programs.

In the greater Washington DC area, Fairfax County Public Schools has the largest administrator-to-pupil ratio. This year they increased the teacher/pupil ratio which means more children in most classrooms. Could your household handle a sudden addition of triplets as well as a reduction in income? This is not helpful for better learning.

A vocal public can make a difference. Elected politicians listen and respond when they want to keep their jobs.

Email and phone all members of the Fairfax County School Board.

Our teaching staff works long and hard every day to help children learn and achieve. Then there is the additional two to three hours per day that most teachers have to take home to finish their work. They live in this area with the same cost-of-living expenses. Many have to start out living with parents or several roommates as well as taking a second job just to make ends meet.

One third of all new hires to FCPS leave within six years because of low pay and poor working conditions. How can FCPS build an experienced and knowledgeable staff with 50% turnover every five years?

Email or call the members of the School Board.

Fairfax School salaries remain on average fifth in the DC area. How can one of the richest counties in the nation justify the lower salaries paid to our employees? This is not competitive. Why wouldn’t new teachers go elsewhere for jobs? Parents want stability in the teaching staff for the best learning for their children. Retention of good teachers begins with better pay.

Email and call the members of the School Board.
